DIY Bamboo Candle Holder

All my time spent in the kitchen got me thinking how I could use basic skewers to make a diy candle holder. I’ve been seeing bamboo hurricanes and lanterns just about everywhere so I decided I could probably come up with something on my own for a fraction of the price. I already own several plain glass vases so I wanted to make use of what I already had as large candle holders take up so much space. This is such a fun and quick diy and it only cost pennies to make! The best part is that you could make so many different designs and when your’e tired of the look you can easily remove the skewers! I will show a few different design ideas below, but it really is the simplest diy and I love the overall look and texture that it adds. Here’s how I did it!

Supplies:

  • bamboo skewers
  • glass vase
  • glue gun
  • jute twine

I went with a tall slender vase that perfectly matched the height of the skewers but you could do any size and just trim down the skewers as needed. I started off by gluing three skewers together, pointy ends down, with the glue gun and made sure they were fully set in place. I then gently spread them slightly apart and glued again to completely secure them. This will vary depending on the design and size of vase you choose, for this vase I did five sets in total of three glued skewers. You could also paint the skewers, would look great in black as well.

Once all the skewers were set and dried, I carefully added a very small amount of glue to the top of each set and adhered them to the vase. I want these to come off easily in case I ever decide to remove them so just a tiny bit of glue is all you need. At this point, don’t worry if the sticks aren’t perfectly spread out, that will be adjusted once you finish it all off in the last step.

To finish off the design and to keep the bottom side of the skewers in place, I simply tied some jute twine around both the top and bottom of the vase. I have jute rope and twine and found the rope was slightly too thick for this look so the twine worked out perfectly. Once everything was tied and set, I adjusted the skewers so they were evenly spaced out. In the picture above you’ll notice I placed them in two ways, as this would also look great slanted towards the same direction. I decided to spread them apart which you can see in the following photos.

I love the look of the wood mixed in with plain glass hurricanes and it would also look amazing with little ones all grouped together. I just did one of these diy’s as a test and since it turned out great I’ll definitely be doing more, you can pick up plain inexpensive glass vases at Ikea or even the dollar store. I grouped a few here together and I think it looks best when they’re all a little different in style and shape.
