Garden Pot Cluster

So we’ve decided to completely redo the patio and at this late point in summer, I’m thinking quick and easy garden diy’s that can carry into fall. One of the projects I’ve been wanting to do for a while is to create a small area with large pots of varying sizes. This actually seems to be such a trend at the moment which I didn’t even know as I just wanted to fill a corner with greenery and keep it all very low maintenance. You’ll find this garden trend everywhere sometimes called a pot cluster or a pot trio depending on the number of pots. I went with a set of three different pots for this project and will decide later if I’d like to add more. As we’re into August already, it would likely be something I would add to next summer. Plus I’m loving the look of the three pots on their own and the plants will grown in and fill more space over time.

As per usual, I like to keep all my DIY’s simple and budget friendly. Large pots can be quite expensive, so after searching everywhere I settled on these two to start with, from Home Depot. They weren’t the colour I was after but they were a great size and on sale! That is one of the bonuses of buying late in the garden season. Next, I wanted a third pot that was completely different looking, smaller, and with a bit more detail to add some interest. I found this pretty pot at Winners. It had some marks on it but it was getting a fresh coat of paint so it didn’t matter.

Now a bit of elbow grease to get these pots ready for some spray paint. The white pot was a nice smooth matte finish so no additional prep work was required. The green pots were very shiny and needed a good sand to get the shine off so the spray paint would stick properly. I used a sanding block to sand it completely and wiped off the dust. Then I used black Rustoleum spray paint and primer in flat finish.

Below is a picture of the pot with just one coat. I ended up doing two main coats of spray paint, letting it dry about an hour in between. For the third coat, I just did some minor touchups as needed. I also just spray painted the inside at the very top where the soil wouldn’t cover it.

As for planting I wanted all greens since I already have other pots in the garden. It’s late in the season so it was slim pickings but ferns are always available and so easy to care for. So for the large pot, I did a Kimberly Queen Fern, I love how it grows upwards which adds some height. In the matching smaller pot I planted a Boston Fern. And in the last one I went with Asparagus fern, it trails downward which adds variety and it’s such a great shade of green. The best part about these pots is that they can get moved indoors once the harsh winter weather sets in. I love the simple modern look of this pot trio, it just fills in this corner spot perfectly.
