Let’s Talk Thrifting Tips

If you follow me on Instagram at Simply Styled Inspo you’ll know I’m obsessed with thrifting! I share my finds on the regular from all of my favourite thrift and antique shops. I love to decorate spaces with a mix of old and new and nothing injects a little character like a thrifted piece. Over time, I’ve amassed handy thrifting knowledge, tips and tricks. So below, I’ll be sharing my favourite things to look for.

I think one of my biggest tips is to go into a thrift store and first just do a quick scan of the aisles. Usually on that first lap I can spot any major gems and quickly grab before someone else spots it. Then, I’ll take my time going through all of the sections carefully and thoroughly. Since I’m big on DIY, I look for items that have great potential. I’ve made over countless vases with just some quick spray paint. Or magically transformed neglected items with a little elbow grease and my favourite, Bar Keeper’s Friend.

So let’s get started with the list of MUST THRIFT items…

BRASS

I always look for anything brass. Dishes, candlesticks, bowls, you name it! Snatch those brass beauties!!

BASKETS

I find baskets to be hit or miss as they’re such a popular section. But if you really pick through there’s always something hiding in the back or within a bunch of baskets stuck together. Not only do baskets make for fab storage, they also make great planters. they add the perfect texture to any space.

POTTERY & CERAMICS

Pottery and ceramics have become so very popular as of late. They’re such interesting decor elements and are the perfect addition to the shelfie! I try to look for special characteristics, markings on the bottom or unique glazes. You’ll find unexpected pieces in the kitchen aisle that make for great decorating items. For example, little ceramic pots for matchsticks!

WOOD TRAYS & BOWLS

Always always check for wood trays and bowls. They add such warmth and even if they’re a bit scratched up, it adds to the character. Throw in your remotes on the coffee table, style with some decorative beads, the possibilities are endless! My faves are little round wood bowls, they make great jewellery organizers too.

CANDLESTICKS

I’m always amazed at the selection of candlesticks. No, not the tacky ones lol but there’s always a unique set sitting around. Or sometimes it’s just one lonely guy but paired with another set, instant centerpiece for a dining table! Definitely a fun section to peruse!

GLASS

I must say the glassware section is not my fave but again, you never know what you’ll find. Here’s a look at a glass cloche I spotted. It was missing the base but there were tons of things I could find to use as the bottom. Such a cute fun find to decorate throughout the seasons, adding a touch of whimsy and I like the airy vibes it brings.

VASES

Of course vases are one of the best things to thrift but for me it’s finding a unique shape that I haven’t seen before or potential for a DIY. I’ve made over countless DIY vases from textured spray paint, found pots to Anthropogie dupes. Such fun projects and definitely a way to save a bundle. Also, look for large vases, they make great statement pieces, the bigger the better lol!

BAGGED ITEMS

Maybe just maybe my favourite spot to check out at the thrift store is the BAGGED ITEMS! I always find the best stuff for less than a couple bucks. Even just for interest sakes the most unique things are stashed here. It’s not a common spot to look. I’ve found everything from beautiful wooden knives, antique little frames, cute candle holders, woods beads for crafts. You name it, they got it. There’s usually a kids section too, definitely worth a look!

That concludes my must have thrift finds. There’s definitely more to add to this list, so this will likely be a continued series, stay tuned!

I’ll leave you with a few pics of just some of my thrifted treasures.

Happy Thrifting!!
