Here it is… my first Christmas DIY of the season! Starting off simple and festive with this DIY Christmas wreath using a hoola hoop. I actually have a thing for wreaths and place one pretty much everywhere! When I found this hoola hoop for 44 cents on clearance at the end of the summer, I knew immediately I was attempting a DIY wreath. For this project I used greenery from right outside my front door and some red ribbon to tie in with the rest of my classic cozy Christmas theme this year. Here’s a step by step on how I achieved a modern wreath that cost next to nothing!
I debated painting the hoola hoop black or gold but decided on matte black and then I gave it a vintage vibe with some gold acrylic paints. This way I can repurpose for another season or holiday. I simply dabbed on the gold paint and then rubbed it off with a paper towel, this technique worked great with the smooth outside finish of the hoola hoop and the matte base spray paint.
Next step was to add greenery, luckily living on the west coast means pine trees right outside my front door! Makes for great foraging! I really wanted a minimal modern look for this so I just added greenery to the bottom portion of the hoop and to keep it all in place I used green floral wire, you could also use twist ties or fishing wire. I worked in two kinds of pine and layered each piece to achieve my desired look, creating a focal point in the centre. This is where the ribbon comes in! For the holidays I buy a ton of the same ribbon (this red actually came from the dollar store) and I use it throughout the house, adding festive touches everywhere.
The size of this hoola hoop makes it ideal to hang in windows, a door, above a bed or a over a mirror. I had a specific spot in mind and hung it over another DIY, my framed textured art (using plaster). The white background is perfect for the pop of greenery.
As for hanging I have another hack! I used a white hook with a sticker and the trick here was to paint the front part of the hook the same as the hoop and the back white part just blended in seamlessly. To remove later, use a blow dryer to unstick the adhesive part of the hook.
Hope you enjoyed this super simple DIY, you can definitely customize it to fit your style.
