Monterey, Carmel & Big Sur, California

After our few days spent in San Francisco it was time to move on to the next part of our California roadtrip and continue the drive south for about two hours, with a stay in Monterey Bay and stops in Carmel and Big Sur. This was the highlight of the trip, driving down the coast was breathtaking and the two hour drive turned into a several hours as we stopped every chance we could to take in the stunning views.

Coastal Views

We eventually made it to Monterey Bay and although this coastal town is known for its scenery it is also surprisingly cool in the summer and it does get quite foggy from the difference in temperature between the cool ocean water and the warmer air. Despite the fog days, we were all set to check out the 17 mile drive which is a scenic route from Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach including coastal cliffs, wildlife, famous landmarks and impressive mansions.

17 mile drive

There were so many highlights from the 17 mile drive. The gated community of Pebble beach is surrounded by such natural beauty. And I enjoyed seeing the iconic Lone Cypress, which has braved the elements all these years standing alone on a granite cliff overlooking the Pacific coast and is believed to be 250 years old.

Aside from all the views, Monterey and Carmel have the most charming towns. There are popular strips of cafes, shops and restaurants, definitely lots to see and do!

Last on this part of the trip was a drive through Big Sur and it certainly did not disappoint with its rugged coastline and dramatic vistas. We made so many stops along this stretch to truly be able to take in the raw beauty.
